Alarm systems can work just using DTMF tones. A co-worker here switched to Primus and then his alarm stopped working. His alarm CO told him it would be $400 for a new panel and wireless, plus another few bucks a month for wireless monitoring. Primus has a deal with someone else, so he took it there. Rather than replacing the panel, the installation tech changed the way the alarm talks back to the station, and it's worked fine ever since.
