On the topic of how these guys make money, I think Technorati's doing OK. The small amount of ad revenue is only one tiny part of their business model. I think their deals with CNN and some other big content sites are the more interesting part of their revenue flow. You might want to ping Dave Sifry and chew it over with him - he's a really interesting, smart, pleasant bloke.
