Re: Re: Deep Thoughts About VoIP's Future in Canada

Oh, please -- we've seen this all before. It's TV Wars, version 2. Last time Rogers and Bell ExpressVu got together and told the CRTC that, well, there's cable competition, so let's deregulate. They did. Prices have only gone one way since: north. As to Vonage competing with Bell and Rogers in a serious way, what you don't seem to understand is that Bell and Rogers control the Internet access that Vonage needs -- unlike Vonage, which sells Voice-over-Internet, Bell and Rogers merely sell Voice-over-IP-over-DSL/HFC. Why the hell would they let Vonage threaten them? So, of course Bell and Rogers will have "premium" service, insofar as their services will actually have voice quality that can compete with traditional TDM -- they own the Internet lines. And of course there will be no price competition as a result, any more than there is in the virtually-deregulated cable/satellite industry (cablecos' crocodile tears to the contrary) -- there are no feasible competitors, including Vonage. Finally, as to who these mysterious "others" are that the poster above thinks will emerge from applying a theory to real life: guess what. They don't exist. But, hey, prove me wrong -- build a business case for building your own wire into every Canadian home, without 30 years of protected monopoly to subsidize me, and show me how that gets you a viable business to challenge the oligopoly Bernier is deregulating.
