I don't believe this is a big win for the consumer, but VZW can't lose - this is just one more offering on VCast. That said, I wish they would reconsider the walled garden approach to content. I believe user-gen video will take off on mobile in the near future. The average clip length on Gootube is ~ 2min, which is perfect for mobile. This will break when a service comes along that builds a bridge between the Internet and mobile devices that is suitable for mass adoption:
- A free service (ad supported like Gootube on the web)
- That offers automated transcoding of content for mobile users
- And solves distribution and discovery challenges that are specific to the mobile space.
