Re: I Need a Tech Valet

As a Microsoft Certified Small Business Specialist, our company has extensive experience setting up wired and wireless small business networks. Setting up an interconnected home entertainment/office/media environment as you have described is similar in many respects, and we do so for executives and employees of our business clients.
In terms of how long it would take to do it yourself, there is a significant learning curve. We have the wiring and wireless equipment, and have learned the tricks of installation, integration, and configuration of various solutions around a central platform such as Windows XP Media Edition. Therefore we are ‘orders of magnitude’ faster than you would be doing it yourself. However, the economics of saving significant time (and inevitable frustration) of engaging a technology specialist have to be weighed against the fact that our services are more expensive than the hourly value some people assign to their own time (your estimate of $50/hour is low for the expertise required).
So I suggest you call a local technology specialist and find one that has expanded into home media and get an estimate of time and cost. Our personal clients (including the ones who initially tried it themselves and gave up out of frustration) tell us it is well worth paying the price for a specialist.
