Mark: Telecommuting has its advantages in selected circumstances. However, a successful company needs a workplace that is more than individuals producing output. It needs a work community with values, visions, teamwork, and collaboration. That is not developed electronically, it is developed with in person interaction. Managers that have built successful companies know this. Telecommuting cannot and should not replace the workplace but supplement it once relationships have been developed and there is a specific need (either individually or within an identified group).
