Mark, You'll find some good suggestions from Oshoma over here. He mentioned Brian’s Latest Comments plugin, which is a great tool, but the link there is wrong...it should be http://meidell.dk/latestcomments/. The best place to find themes is http://themes.wordpress.net/. They recently had a WP 2.0 Theme Competition, from which you might be able to find an interesting one that will work with your WP installation.
