I'm going to have to agree with Stuart - I don't think the move is too surprising or curious at all. Seems like a fairly logical pogression for them - trying to extend their AdSense success to related markets. I've no doubt that Google will try to extend their ad network into every possible nook and cranny, and when they do, people will no longer think "Microsoft and Windows" when you say "the evil monopoly".
