Re: Finally, A Google-AOL Marriage?
by
Stuart MacDonald
As John Battelle wrote (and has been reported by others), *if* GOOG has agreed to somehow assist AOL secure better placement on GOOG pages (preferencing by any other name...), then I am truly fearful for those kids.
Doing so would put a bullet through their brand promise and be a major stumble over their own high bar as self-ordained repository of, um, everything. I mentioned the possibilty of this type of thing happening to a few folks at a neighborhood Holiday Party last night. Not surprisingly, to me anyway, the response universally was "NOOOO...how could they do that?" And these are Just Folks, not interested parties of any kind, who have simply come to rely on and trust GOOG.
If Just Folks think that their trust has been mis-placed and can be bought out? Yowza...hell hath no fury.
Jumping the Shark doesn't come close to what they would be doing to themselves. Hope it's not true.
