NTP is your classic "patent troll". In the US, all you need is a broad patent and a lawyer to file suit against anybody. You may never have done anything with the patent, it may not be relevant, it may get struck down in future, but if it stands up while you press your claim, you and your lawyer will get rich. There is no penalty for frivolous claims and court actions (and there are tens of thousands), there is no fair way to deal with this kind of technology equivalent of ambulance-chasing. In the end, everyone but the lawyers pay for this drag on innovation.
