Actually, the gadget guide in the December and the stand-alone spin-off are entirely different. The first is called "Tools" and it's a guide to new and forthcoming gadgets using the usual catalog-style format. The second is called "Test" and it's a hands-on Consumer Reports-style review of gadgets already on the market. Everything in Test has been, as the name suggests, tested in our lab or in situ.
Think of Tools as the promise of gadgets just hitting the market, and Test as the reality of what's been available for at least a few months (long enough to test). There's almost no overlap between them.
