Rick Segal's post about hiring a freelance programmer to fix a Windows Live Messenger problem got me thinking about my own high-tech needs. Frankly, I need someone to come to my house and wire everything up. I need my stereo, laptop, desktop, television and telephone connected so they work together over the Internet and/or a LAN/WAN rather than acting as silos. Could I do it myself? Perhaps but it would take too much time and I'd probably make a few frustrating mistakes along the way. Any ideas?

Mark, funny that I am reading this. As I was pulling into work today I heard on the radio that one of the local college's is conducting a SMART home technologies seminar that is supposed to get people on track to offer home theater, networking, stereo, computer, cable, etc installation and maintenance.
The commercial stated this is the next big thing... I am curious as to what you would pay to have someone come into your home a do those sort of things you describe above. Re: Re: I Need a Tech Valet
i guess it depends on how much time would be need. let's say $50 an hour as a ballpark figure - plus any equpiment required such as a slingbox.

Amen, sign me up, I'm too old to bother figuring out all that stuff for myself.

Wired all my appartment with Gigabit Ethernet at the same time I was rewirering electricity. Then, connected everything to this personnal network with a more than 1TB Raid5 server. Afterwards, need something? Search on the server. The ISP is providing TV via ADSL and viewable over the Ethernet connection. Great!
Does that looks OK to you? Sorry, living in Paris, France ;-) Re: Re: I Need a Tech Valet

As a Microsoft Certified Small Business Specialist, our company has extensive experience setting up wired and wireless small business networks. Setting up an interconnected home entertainment/office/media environment as you have described is similar in many respects, and we do so for executives and employees of our business clients.
In terms of how long it would take to do it yourself, there is a significant learning curve. We have the wiring and wireless equipment, and have learned the tricks of installation, integration, and configuration of various solutions around a central platform such as Windows XP Media Edition. Therefore we are ‘orders of magnitude’ faster than you would be doing it yourself. However, the economics of saving significant time (and inevitable frustration) of engaging a technology specialist have to be weighed against the fact that our services are more expensive than the hourly value some people assign to their own time (your estimate of $50/hour is low for the expertise required). So I suggest you call a local technology specialist and find one that has expanded into home media and get an estimate of time and cost. Our personal clients (including the ones who initially tried it themselves and gave up out of frustration) tell us it is well worth paying the price for a specialist. Barry www.ibicorp.ca Trackbacks
