Some quick hits for the weekend.....If you're at all interested in the net neutrality debate, this is a must-see Daily Show video (hat tip to Rob Hyndman), which is not only hilarious but arguably provides the clearest explanation of what this debate is really all about. It doesn't hurt the guy offering the explanation is the "nerd from those funny Mac vs. Windows television spots. Another Daily Show segment (hat to to Breebop) takes a look at social networking sites such MySpace and Facebook - very, very funny.....Robert Cringely has a excellent column in which he argues that newspapers are in some ways a superior way to access the news than Web sites because you can quickly scan newspapers whereas the Web has limitations on how many stories it can physically display. It's an encouraging viewpoint for us ink-stained wretches fearful the Web is going to totally wipe out newspapers...There is a report  Advanced Micro Devices plans to acquire video-chip maker ATI for $5.6-billion. Frankly, it doesn't thrill me. For one, it's yet another Canadian high-tech player (this one actually pretty big) falling into the hands of a foreign owner (who's next Cognos, Open Text, Research in Motion?)....Finally, Toronto Hydro unveiled more details about its municipal Wi-fi network that will be launched in September. When asked about what kind of speeds the network will offer, the answer was 54Mbps (which is technically possible assuming it's the middle of the night, you're the only person on the network, and you happen to be standing under an access point!). When pressed on what consumers could really expect, the answer was revised to a more realistic 3Mbps to 7Mbps.
Enjoy your weekend.
