Google unveils a new service (Google Spreadsheets) and the high-tech world (at least the Google-obsessed blogosphere) goes nuts. I mean it's not like the consumer products world goes crazy every time Kraft releases the new type of peanut butter. Don't get me wrong, Google is a fascinating beast given its tentacles are going in so many different directions but every time its army of PhDs or M&A specialists create something new, the tech world loses it. Who knows, maybe Google Spreadsheets is another key chapter in Google's impending war against Microsoft but at this point it just doesn't seem as interesting to me as the launch of the Google browser or a multi-billion dollar acquisition (eBay, AOL, Omnicom?). So for now, I'll let others go ga-ga over Google. By the way, kudos to the New York Times' John Markoff for breaking the story.

Ugh, agreed. I posted about this today (before reading yours). I'm totally not excited by any of Google's latest products.
It's like they could create Google Notepad and the world would go crazy. Of course by "The World" I really just mean technologists and the 2-3 million people who follow their lead. Re: Gaga Over Google

There was a letter in last week's Economist that posits a different theory on why Google appears to be all over the place. The author wrote that it's like Reagan and the Cold War where the Soviet Union (MS?) was forced to react to even perceived threats like the 'Star Wars' Strategic Defense Initiative. This is a very useful tactic of monetary attrition when facing heavy market incumbents (Microsoft or Cisco) when you've got some cash as your competitors throw good money after bad trying to react, often buying dodgy companies in order to make up the percieved ground 'lost'. The result might be a bleeding, weakened competitor lacking focus and strategic vision. Or the symptoms of the same fact within your company. Interesting times.

I’m underwhelmed by what I’ve read so far. For me, a spreadsheet program needs to be on the PC for speed and security of my data. I really can’t see this being a big deal any time soon.

guess this is not about competing directly with microsoft excel, but more about a quick online spreadsheet collaboration tool that doesnt require downloading any software, doesnt require that you email spreadsheets back and forth because you can work on them together with your project team members, doesnt involve any licensing issues, can work from any computer ... even those that dont have a spreadsheet app installed, and best of all would probably be integrated with other services such as google calendar (let's hope so) as it rolls out of beta.
so this is a complementary service rather than a competitive offering. It still isnt feature complete... for instance it doesnt have charting capabilities, but I guess they have that on their list of things to do. Re: Gaga Over Google
