In the name of transparency, I must confess to having few marketing skills. As co-founder of Blanketware.com (a Web 2.0 start-up before its time), part of my job was marketing and communications. As a result, I carefully crafted together personalized press releases, highlighted stories written by the journalists I was targeting, and generally demonstrated (at least in my own mind!) that I was more than just another corporate flack. The result? Nothing! It was a miserable failure but valuable insight into how difficult marketing and P.R. can be.
Today, I'd use a different approach by leveraging the blogosphere to deliver a message because it's a much easier way and effective way to do business. This has been evident by how we've marketed mesh over the past six weeks. With no budget, we have been able to generate tremendous buzz for the conference...and sell a whole budget of tickets. Not bad for five guys with full-time jobs! It really does amaze me how powerful a medium the blogosphere can be. After some technical issues, we finally have our weekly podcast available. Kevin and I touch upon Nortel's accounting woes (yet another restatement), Vonage's IPO (it's apparently worth $2.5-billion), RIM's new legal battles (Visto launches a lawsuit) and the possibility of a Google browser (Google carps about new features in IE 7). Enjoy!

If anything, bloggers are being spoiled rotten by the variety of tools (most of them free) being developed. The latest service is Sphere.com, which is finally entering the ultra-competitive blog search market after a long time in beta. TechCrunch has all the details about Sphere's features (when does Michael Arrington sleep?). Sphere has also raised $3.75-million in venture capital but Om Malik makes a good point that company is going to need more to compete against Technorati, Ice Rocket, Google, Blogdigger, et al. Still, there's always room for a new player with an edge. After all, Google entered the search market as a nobody and now rules the world. Sphere's financing comes from Hearst Publishing, Trident Capital and About.com (the New York Times). |
My blog has moved.
