I've spent most of the afternoon working and preparing for a dinner party but the silver lining is I've been listening to Pandora, which seems to be taking hold in the mainstream with a flurry of non-technology media coverage (here, here and here). I mean, how can you not like a music service that lets you create a channel based on Boston! During the recent iSummit conference in Toronto, I had a chance to sit down with Pandora CEO Joe Kennedy, who talked about Pandora's roots as a math-based project in Oakland, Ca. - best know up here for being the former home of Oakland Golden Seals. Kennedy said Pandora's business is starting to gain momentum as the amount of advertising grows and it generates commissions on music sales. A particularly interesting comment was the music industry needs something more than the iPod and iTunes to succeed. It wasn't meant as derogatory to Apple but that other music service providers and device makers need to do a better job to generate more excitement about consuming digital music.

I've been using Pandora for a while and it's great. I've got a few channels on there, and I like that it updates with new things when I listen to the same station a few months later.

WOW. How awesome is this thing? And I'm loving the UI, too.
Re: Lovin' Pandora
They were initially the Oakland Seals and changed to California Golden Seals when they tried to appeal to an entire Bay Area audience under "new" ownership. Charlie Finley introduced colorful sports attire when he ran the Oakland "A's" and carried this tradition over when he bought control of the Seals and renamed them as mentioned above. Yellow and then white skates, along with more colorful uniforms green and gold (think "A's"), were supposed to bring customers. They eventually moved to Cleveland as the Barons and a year or two later were absorbed into the Minnesota North Stars system in a deal that gave one of the involved parties NHL rights to the Bay Area market. The Minnesota North Stars moved to Dallas and those owership rights became the San Jose Sharks. A complicated history to say the least.
