Wikipedia Hits Milestone

I had an interesting chat yesterday with Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales (a short story is here; the Q&A is behind the National Post's walled garden) as the free online encyclopedia closes in on its one millionth English-language article. While it didn't delve too much into some of the controversy that engulfs Wikipedia from time to time about Wales' benevolent dictatorship or inaccurate or false contributions, the conversation talked about how big Wikipedia could get (50 million articles according to Mitch Kapor vs. Wales' belief there's growth but it will get more difficult as more obscure topics are covered) and the tremendous volunteer-rism on the Web given the rise of Wikis and blogs. Wales said self-produced content is not a new phenomena given all the activity on bulletin boards and mailing lists long before Wikipedia was started. I'm also intrigued by Wales' for-profit venture, Wikia, which operates the ever-growing Wikicities empire - 900 active Wikis and counting. Wikia is depending on AdSense for revenue - a strategy that could pay off in spades as number of Wikicities communities expands and Wikia simply leverages its software and expanding real estate platform for advertising. Wales also expects to see Wikis make inroads within corporations who use it as a communications tool. Personally, I think a fertile corporate opportunity for Wikis are manuals. Instead of having technical writers compile manuals that require a PhD in hyrogliphics to understands, Wikis could actually produce manuals that are user-friendly and actually useful.
