Dave Sifry has issued his latest state of the blogosphere report and - surprise, surprise - the blogosphere is still growing. In fact, the blogosphere is doubling every five and a half months as a new blog is created a second. Technorati now tracks 27.2 million blogs and its blog finder has more than 850,000 blogs and 2,500 categories. It would also be interesting to see how Technorati's doing from a business perspective. It's tracking more blogs, getting more traffic (60% of it is spam pings, however) and solidifying its status as one of the blog search leaders. Does Technorati move to expand its strategic focus by acquiring an RSS reader or blog publisher? Or does Technorati get snapped up by someone looking for a bigger foothold in the blog search market such as Yahoo or Google? Given all the M&A activity (del.icio.us, Flickr, etc.), this is the year Technorati eats or get eaten.

i think technorati has two options to remain viable:
1. it aligns itself with some other blog service providers such as feedemon, feedburner or six apart to create a one stop shopping place where they can cross-pollinate each other's businesses or 2. it goes down the GYM M&A path. frankly, i just don't see a compelling enough business model for technorati to remain independent. i could be wrong. maybe they are signing big corporate deals but i don't see any evidence they are doing it. and as the blog gets better, their server costs must be on the rise. Thanks. I'd agree that it's natural home is as part of something else, somehow, unless they could expand their offer beyond what it essentially is - search in one specific vertical of online content, blogs - to attract a wider audience. However, that feels expensive and potentially suicidal.

stuart,
i agree. the challenge facing technorati is how long their VCs - mobius is one of them, i think - to make it happen? at some point, the VCs are going to be thinking about a liquidation event (i.e. sale) or a 1+1=3 deal with another blogging service. you have to wonder how long sifry will have to drive the business as it stands now.
