Amid concerns about lacklustre interest in municipal elections, the town of Markham, Ont. has been aggressive in the use of online voting. To that end, officials siad the number of people who voted online in yesterday's election jumped 48% to 10,639 from 7,210 in 2003. Sure, it's a small increase relatively speaking but it accounts for 18% of total votes cast so perhaps Markham's on to something.

Re: Markham Claims Online Voting Success
It would be a fantastic leap if other municipalities picked up on Markham's forward thinking. I (gulp) didn't vote this week in the municipal elections; work, life and deadlines got in the way. The idea of waiting in line at my local community centre wasn't nearly as appealing as it sounds. Had there been an on-line opportunity, I would have voted as soon as the polls had opened :-(

I'd like to see the site and what security measures were taken. The idea of online voting is appealing - the lack of security is appaling.
I also have to wonder about the quality of the vote. If people that are voting wouldn't otherwise drive down to the community hall to vote - I have to wonder if they bothered to become an educated voter about the peoples platforms or previous performance. As an online Markham voter I can address the latter part of your comment. I found that the ability to vote online enhanced my ability to be an educated voter. For municipal elections people rarely see, hear, or pay attention to the candidates and thier platforms. When I had to make my choices for counsillor and school board trustee I was only familiar with the incumbants. This is the case for most at the voters box, so those are the people they vote for. Online voting allowed me to use "the google" on candidates and get informed. The information was there in the moment I needed it, and 2 minutes later it was forgotten. Would I take the time to do the search before I go to the polling station, probably not since you are coming home from work, etc. etc. I voted at 1am when I had 10 minutes of no distractions, and time to get informed. All in all, a great voting experience and I support expanded use.
