Where there's smoke, there's usually fire, which is why many people expect Bell to unveil its IP-TV service soon. While there are few details, it will likely let consumers buy basic service and then have the freedom to purchase specific channels, rather than having to take bundles. It's possible the launch and/or strategic plan will be unveiled during Bell's annual investor day on Feb. 1. With Rogers and Videotron getting more aggressive about the local phone market, Bell has little choice but to fight back by getting into TV. A big question is whether Microsoft's IP-TV software is being used by Bell, which would be a much-needed win for Microsoft.
Update: Light Reading has a story on the IP-TV market in the U.S., and how BellSouth and Qwest are moving forward with plans to launch service this year.

And then in the new "tollbooth" fantasy world, what, Bell will turn around and charge the content producers more to shove their fat content down Bell's pipes, so that Bell can then turn around and charge subscribers more to see the content they themselves are peddling? Gimme a bloody break. These boys need to get out more.

Mark, any idea what the difference between this and ExpressVu TV is? Or is it the same thing? Bell has had it available for 6-8 months at least in my buiding. They've gone with a few names for it like ExpressVu For Condos, ExpressVu TV but as far as I have been able to find out its IP-TV. Its just like sattelite ExperessVu where you can order the basic service and either bundles or individual channels.
I would have ordered it 6 months ago but they claim I have to have a "phone" number. Just like the early days of DSL (before naked DSL) when they forced you to have Bell Phone service. I only have VoIP so its a no go until they wake up one day. Re: Bell Canada to Launch IP-TV?

This rumour has been around for a while now. Is there anything new on it? IP TV sounds like a logical direction to take things at some point.
