Completely off topic but how is it we can send men to the moon and create a global communications systems that provides all the information we could ever want to know - yet there are tens of thousands of people in Louisiana still desperately waiting for help? It has been five days since Katrina but people still lacking basics such as food, water and shelter. If foreign journalists can roam through the streets of New Orleans, where's the U.S. Army or the National Guard? When order does return to Louisiana, it will be heartening to see organizations such as the Red Cross start do help people.

Wdn't it be ironic if al Qaeda had been planning an attack on New Orleans, but was foiled by the hurricane -- an act of Allah.

what i've seen on the news are search and rescue teams on boats and helicopters working 24 hrs around the clock plucking people off roofs and water. i've seen monster helicopters dropping sand bags to fill the breach on the canal. i've seen police and city officials (who undoubtledly lost everything) still doing their jobs in difficult times. what i've seen is media helicopters dropping off and picking up cameramen and reporters and not bothering to evacuate anyone else. I saw one reporter tell a stranded couple "we'll call somebody to get you out" and they left. No wonder it's a mess down there.

What I've seen is authorities trying to do their jobs, putting their lives at risk, only to have a bunch of idiots on the ground shoot at them. Is this what the National Rifle Association means when it says American's have the right to bear arms? What it means is anarchy -- in a state of crisis, it assures that those with the means will look after themselves at the expense of the safety and welfare of others. The only difference between New Orleans and Iraq is that American authorities don't want to shoot back at their own citizens for fear of being caught on CNN, thus hindering the rescue effort.

When people do silly things, like build cities under sea level close to the sea (or build on the western side of the California fault lines) and the inevitable happens, why is there suprise? The US is happy to pay less tax in order to not build the infrastructures necessary to protect them. Why build levees to withstand Category 3 when there is a Cat 4 or 5 even 15 years? Louisiana and Mississippi continually elect ineffectual gov't officials who have now delivered them exactly what was asked for - no friends in Washington to help them.
