In light of some recent posts I've made about the business models for the blog market, Bubble Generation has an interesting take on Technocrati. The key point is while Technorati does a great job tracking and indexing blogs, it has a huge flaw: the lack of an elegant RSS reader. Bubble Generation compares this competitive position with Bloglines, which captured peoples' affections with an easy-to-use RSS reader. This eventually captured the attention of a suitor: Ask Jeeves. That said, the common link between Bloglines and Technorati is niether one has a compelling business model. They both jumped into the fast-emerging blog business with cool technology but there doesn't appear to be a viable, scaleable business model for either one of them. Bloglines got lucky because Ask Jeeves liked its buzz and user base so it no longer really has to think about how to build a business. Technorati, however, has got to figure out how to build a better mouse trap or hope there's someone out there - Google? - who likes it indexing technology
