The race is succeed Bill Owens as Nortel's CEO has apparently started, and the frontrunner seems to be Gary Daichendt, who has been sitting on the telecom sidelines since 2000 when he retired from Cisco Systems. Daichendt was appointed Nortel's COO and president yesterday, and based on an interview with Bloomberg, he is confident the CEO position is pretty much in the bag. You have to wonder what Peter Currie is thinking? Currie rejoined Nortel in January for a second stint as Nortel's CFO, and it was widely assumed he was Owens' heir apparent. I mean, why would Currie return to Nortel to do the same job he had from 1994 to 1997?
If Daichendt is the next Nortel CEO, it's a curious choice. Although he's well respected and has a reputation as an operations expert, Daichendt has been running a real estate development and property management company for the past five years. His skills must be so extraordinary Nortel was confident it didn't have to recruit someone who has been through the telecom wars in recent years. Then again, nothing Nortel does these days surprises me.
