As someone who has plunged into the world of blogs in the past year, I've come to appreciate the insight and knowledge of some very smart people out there. The problem, however, is the difficulty in tracking down good-quality blogs. Often, the process involves a lot of "blind dating" where you stumble upon something interesting before coming to a dead end. It's an unproductive and frustrating process. Of course you could do a Google search for "best blogs" or "blog awards" but that kicks back subjective choices that, although interesting, can be far from satisfying.
All this got me thinking maybe there has to be a way to combine the power of Google, Technorati and eBay to develop a better mousetrap. Bear with me because this is an idea I haven't completely thought through, but I'm thinking about a tool where a Google-like spider goes out and ranks blogs based on criteria such as how many other blogs and/or Web sites are linked in to them. This ranking criteria would, for example, put someone like Om Malik near the top of technology blogs. The other tool would lie within the blogging community and would allow blog visitors to rank the sites they visit - much like eBay offers with its user feedback scores. This could involve a small piece of software that bloggers would install on their sites if they wanted, or it could be a central location such as Technorati where people could come to submit ratings, which would be published dynamically.
Perhaps something like this system already exists, perhaps I'm planting the seeds for the next great online success story - if so, i want a commission! - but it seems like a no-brainer to me. If anyone has some feedback/suggestions/ideas, I'd be most appreciative. If anyone has some money looking for a good back-of-the-envelope idea, I'm open for business.

Great idea. I'm looking at a company wanting to get funding for this type of thing. And you didn't call your local VC? Mark, I'm crushed

rick,
i didn't think VCs were looking at back-of-the-envelope ideas anymore! the big question is the business model for this idea. would it be a google adsense kind of revenue model? Re: Re: Is there a Rating System for Blogs?

Mark,
We are. At least JLA is. I am at CeBIT right now working with a number of companies that are starting on the ol back of an envelope. What the dot.boom taught lots of people was to do the start ups in a smarter way. Come by when I get back and I'll show you some of the new stuff that's happening. Try this:
http://www.technorati.com/live/top100.html Unfortunately Om Malik isn't in the top 100, but it includes a lot of political blogs too, and there are the familiar suspects. Also, bloggers essentially rate blogs by linking to them. By the way, you probably don't see a lot of comments because of the bother of registering. Re: Re: Is there a Rating System for Blogs?

thanks for the technorati and comment tips. blogware apparently allows for anonymous comments if you put a check mark in the form. i'll dig around to see what's what.

I am one such person who doesn't comment because of registration rule.

By golly, I can post without registration. The login fields have been deceiving me all along.

I've had ideas around this type of rating thing for about 8 years but haven't come up with a revenue model yet. So it will remained shelved until I do.

Blogshares.com already does much of what you are looking for.

Sorry Irwin, I'd have to dissagree. Blogshares actually does nothing along the lines of what I'm thinking for this kind of thing.
