It seems the New York Times has discovered that VOIP is alive and well in Canada. In an article today, the paper's Canadian business corresponent Bernard Simon talks about how Canada's incumbent carriers are facing a "serious threat to their long-entrenched dominance". At best, this assessment is overly optimistic when you consider that Internet telephony players such as Vonage and Primus are just starting to offer the service to consumers. A more accurate take is that the Internet is allowing new competitors to enter the market without having to make massive infrastructure investments. This environment compares with the late-1990s when competitive carriers such as Norigen and OCI Communications took a stab at taking on Bell Canada - only to fail miserably after spending hundreds of millions of dollars. Before VOIP takes off in Canada, there needs to be regulatory changes that has kept the price of local service at low levels. VOIP also needs to become more user-friendly so that its installation in a multi-phone household can be plug and play.

I have been using VOIP for the last 6 month and very happy with the quality and service offered. My provider is a local BC, Canadian company called globeconnect.ca . They were able to offer similar service to regular landline but for half the price. I strongly recommend this new technology if you are looking to cut on your communication and long distance bill

I don't know about this company. They are in Burnaby and I have phoned them at least 12 times. They NEVER answer their phone or return your voice mail nor do they reply to my onlince enquirey.
Are you sure they are ok because their DSL and phone package looks good but I am afraid of a company that does not respond. Thanks Re: VOIP in Canada

From my own experience, Voip providers are plentiful and all offer "deals"; but if sounds too good to be true it usually is. I have tried six voip services (i believe in the technology) but to date only Atlantic Telecom in Canada has delivered on its promises. Their Voip plans are good value, service has been reliable and if i need to talk so someone, i can and they are Canadian! Vonage was good for about 12 weeks then nothing but issues - i think they got too big too fast and lost their core values! I get the feeling Atlantic Telecom is a "family" type business and the service is really good.

I also use Atlantictelecom.ca and they are not the cheapest out there, but if reliability and call quality is important to you as it was for me, you wont be dissapointed. Cheap voip in Canada - not Atlantic Telecom, go for skype if your just wanting to cut some corners for the sake of quality. Take my word for it, cheap voip is just that - cheap and nasty!
